action

Dylan Shoenfield is a snobby, rich, and self-centered 16-year-old high school student determined to earn the title of Blossom Queen . Josh Rosen is an aspiring film geek who is supposed to create a documentary for a film festival. He decides on the topic of popularity and chooses Dylan Shoenfield, of all people, for the research. But Dylan's diva-like behavior leads to an argument between the two, whereupon Josh refuses to work with Dylan again.

When Josh watches the science fiction film The Flight of the Navigator after a while , he reconsiders his decision. Dylan, too, learned from working with Josh and realized that the world is not all about her. A friendship develops between the two young people. Since Josh is interested in Dylan's ex-girlfriend, Amy, Dylan helps him make over and, in fact, it doesn't miss the effect on Amy. However, at the same time the relationship between Dylan and Josh, who now spend a lot of time together, deepens, so that their respective friends turn away from them. When Dylan's boyfriend finds a reason to break up with her, she realizes how superficial her previous friends actually are.

When the day of the film competition arrives and Josh's film The Popularity Project is shown, Dylan sneaks into the screening and gets the impression that the audience is laughing at her. With tears in her eyes, she runs away in the middle of the film. So she cannot notice how sensitive Josh portrays her in the further course of the film and how moved one is in the hall. Through Amy, who brings her a DVD of Josh's film and assures her that she is still her friend, Dylan learns about the effect of the film and that he has made it more popular than ever and that Josh with it I also won the film festival. Nothing stands in the way of a reconciliation between Dylan and Josh. Dylan is named Blossom Queen and the friends become a couple after Josh realizes what he really feels about Dylan.
