In the 16th century a village Mažeikiai is mentioned, which in 1868 with the beginning of the construction of the Liepāja - Romny railway line and the train station formed the basis for a settlement that later expanded into a town. In 1905 Mažeikiai became a parish and a town before the First World War. At the end of 1919 the district administration moved from Seda to Mažeikiai.
On June 9, 2006, the Polish oil company PKN Orlen bought 30.66% of Mažeikių Nafta, the only refinery in the Baltic States, for $ 852 million. There was ORLEN Lietuva .
Today Mažeikiai is the eighth largest city in Lithuania.
The FK Mažeikiai is the most important football club in the city.
The Mažeikiai District Court (Court of First Instance) has its seat in the city .
