Murtfatlar cave complex

Murfatlar ( Basarabi from 1924 to 1965 and 1980 to 2007) is a town in Constanța County in the Dobruja Region , Romania . The approximately 10,000 inhabitants are Romanians , Tatars and Turks .

The city is best known for the extensive viticulture in the area . It also has a port on the Danube-Black Sea Canal .

history

Archaeological finds have shown that the place was settled before the year 992. It belonged to the Bulgarian Empire for a long time .

The first written mention of the village under the name Murfatlar comes from the year 1864.

Attractions

Near the city is the Murfatlar cave complex from the 9th to 11th centuries with the oldest church in the area of ​​today's Romania and with inscriptions in Old Slavonic (in Glagolitic and Cyrillic script), in Greek and carved drawings (graffiti) .

Murfatlar is the birthplace of the former Romanian President Traian Băsescu (* 1951).
