Ovidiu is a town in the district of Constanta in the region Dobrogea ( Dobrogea ) in Romania .

Geographical location

Location of Ovidiu in Constanța County

Ovidiu is not far from the Black Sea coast on the Lacul Siutghiol lagoon . The center of the district capital Constanța is about 12 kilometers southeast.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1650 under the name Silişte . In the course of colonization by the Turks , he was given the name Canara, of Turkish origin . In 1930 - in the era of Greater Romania - the name was changed to Ovidiu after the Roman poet Ovid , who is said to be buried on an island in the lagoon. The most important branches of the economy are agriculture, construction, stone quarrying and tourism.

In 1902 721 inhabitants were registered in the place; 256 of them were Turks and Tatars , 227 Romanians , 130 Germans , 112 Bulgarians and 31 others. In 2002, 13,134 people lived in Ovidiu, including 12,175 Romanians, 442 Tatars, 357 Turks, 117 Roma , 21 Russians or Lipovans and 10 Hungarians .

The railway line leading through Ovidiu from Constanța to Năvodari is currently (2008) out of service. European routes 60 and 87 run through the city . There are bus connections to Constanța and Năvodari.
