Replica of the Nao Victoria in Punta Arenas

The Museo Nao Victoria (Nao Victoria Museum) is located in Punta Arenas ( Chile ). The private museum has been open to the public since October 1st, 2011. Its managing director was recognized by the President of the Republic of Chile for his work in promoting national identity during the 200th anniversary of the independence of the South American country.

Goal setting

The aim of the museum is to be interactive. The aim is to enable the public to experience the full-size replicas of ships that have contributed to the discovery of the region or the colonization of the area or that have a special patrimonial or historical significance for the Magallanes region (Chile). Traditional shipbuilding techniques were used to build the ships.

Collections

The main collection of the museum are the full-size replicas of the historic ships exhibited on the banks of the Strait of Magellan . There are also replicas of weapons and tools from nautical history, copies of documents, books about the historical ships and a ship's carpentry workshop in the open air.

Replicas

The museum currently houses replicas of three ships:

Nao Victoria

The Nao Victoria was a 27 meter long and 7 meter wide nao . She was part of Magellan's fleet that discovered the sea route through the Americas, and she was the only one of the five ships that (under the command of Sebastian Elcano ) completed the first circumnavigation . She was the first ship to explore the region in 1520 - including Patagonia , Cabo Vírgenes , the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego and the Pacific Ocean - and through this she also participated in the discovery of Chile.

The Nao Victoria is one of the most famous ships in world maritime history.

James Caird

The James Caird was a boat (modified by the carpenter Harry McNish) that sailed from Elephant Island to South Georgia during Ernest Shackleton's expedition in 1916 . Many historians describe the voyage of the crew of the James Caird as the most impressive deed in the entire world maritime history.

River ship carpenter's workshop

On December 31, 2011, the construction of two more replicas in the ship's carpenter's workshop of the museum was announced.

Goleta Ancud, the schooner Ancud

The schooner Ancud was the ship that, on the orders of Chilean President Manuel Bulnes Prieto, contributed to the occupation of the Strait of Magellan for Chile and the construction of the Bulnes Fortress (Fuerte Bulnes) in 1843. Captain John Williams Wilson was in command of the schooner .

HMS Beagle

The HMS Beagle was a brig in the British Navy. After several missions in England at the beginning of the 19th century, she was converted into a research ship. Of her three voyages, the most famous was the second, on which she spent almost three years in the region under the command of Captain Fitz Roy and with the young Charles Darwin on board.
