The dog's rods ( Mutinus ) are a genus of fungus from the family of Stinkhorn relatives (Phallaceae).

features

The fruiting bodies of the dog's rods are initially about walnut-sized witch eggs that grow underground and rise from the ground as they grow. The witch's egg consists of a membranous exo peridia , a gelatinous endoperidia, the pale green gleba and the initially still compressed receptacle . By stretching the receptaculum, the peridia tears open and the slimy gleba is lifted upwards; in contrast to the stinkhorn , the receptaculum does not have a hat-shaped part, the gleba directly covers the upper part of the stem.

ecology

The species of the genus are soil sapriobonts or root parasites. The spores are spread by insects.

species

According to the Dictionary of the Fungi , the genus includes twelve species worldwide. Silva et al. recognized 20 species in 2015:

In Central Europe the coming mutinus caninus ( Mutinus caninus ) and the North American entrained types mutinus elegans ( Mutinus elegans ) and mutinus ravenelii ( Mutinus rave nelli ) ago. Mutinus borneensis can be found in Asia and Australia .

etymology

Both the Latin (from mut (t) o - male member; mutinus is the diminutive ) and the German name of the genus refer to the similarity of the fruiting bodies with a dog's penis . Compare also the Roman god Mutinus mutunus .
