My One and Only (German reference title: My One and Only - In Search of Mr. Right ) is an American feature film from 2009 . The world premiere took place during the 59th Berlin International Film Festival on February 12, 2009.

The film tells an episode from the youth of actor George Hamilton in the early 1950s. George and Robbie are the sons of Anne and Dan Devereaux. One day Anne catches her husband in flagrante delicacy with a younger woman and leaves Dan with her sons. With the little money the little family has, they buy a Cadillac and the three set off from New York to Boston . There Anne hopes to find a new husband who can look after her and her children. The first relationship with a US military fails because of his authoritarian behavior towards their sons. The search fails in Pittsburgh when Anne is arrested for one night in a hotel on suspicion of prostitution. The lack of money leads her back to her sister in St. Louis . Here Anne has to work for the first time in her life and gets to know an alleged entrepreneur. The relationship fails on the day of the engagement. It turns out that the candidate is mentally confused and has already promised marriage to numerous women, but is in fact already married.
Disappointed by this further failure, Anne plans to leave town again and go to California . Fed up with constantly changing schools, however, George decides to stay with the relatives in St. Louis. Anne and Robbie then continue their journey west on Route 66 . Anne reduced her travel expenses by taking travelers with her. A gangster couple assaults their mother and son. Completely penniless, Robbie seeks help from his brother in St. Louis. George follows the two and together they reach Los Angeles . Here they find out about their father's sudden death. George then travels to New York for the funeral, where he decides to return to his former school. Meanwhile, Anne keeps the family afloat in Hollywood with extras. Robbie, who had taken drama classes every time he went to school, is now getting his chance at an acting career. Because of the short stays, he had never participated in a premiere. At this time, George visits mother and brother for the holidays. On the set, he witnesses his brother fail miserably in his first role. George is discovered by the producers while preparing his brother for the role text. Instead of his brother, he gets the chance, and George Devereaux becomes the actor George Hamilton.
