The NATO Days in Ostrava (since 2010 short for English NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days , Czech Dny NATO v Ostravě & Dny Vzdušných sil Armády České republiky , literally from the Czech “NATO Days in Ostrava & Air Force Days army of the Czech Republic ") are a since 2001 on an annual basis in the Czech Republic organized exhibition of security forces and civil and civil protection forces ( organizations ). In addition to the presentation of the exhibiting organizations and their equipment, an air show is part of the event, which with an average of 110,000 visitors is one of the largest events in Moravskoslezský kraj and the largest of its kind in Europe.

After the Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999, the NATO days were initially held in the city of Ostrava from 2001 , and since 2003 at the nearby Ostrava Airport in Mošnov . Since 2010 the days of the Czech Air Force have taken place in parallel as part of the NATO Days . The two-day main program is accompanied by a number of events, including on the site of the Witkowitz ironworks .

In addition to NATO member states, non-members also take part in the NATO days, including Saudi Arabia (2017), Switzerland (2016, 2012) and Austria (since 2010). Of the 29 member states, Iceland , Luxembourg , Portugal , Bulgaria , Albania , Croatia and Montenegro have never participated in the NATO Days up to and including 2017 .

history

The main developments of the NATO days are presented below.

2001

In 2001 the event took place for the first time as NATO Day in Ostrava at the local exhibition center Černá louka. Equipment from security forces and aid organizations was shown. In addition, anti-terrorist units demonstrated their actions. The event was initially attended by 10,000 people. Poland was the only partner that participated in the event with paratroopers that year .

2002

The following year, NATO Day took place in the same place. Slovakia , not a NATO member at the time, presented itself as a new partner . 15,000 visitors took part in the event.

2003

In 2003, NATO Day took place for the first time on the premises of the Ostrava Regional Airport , which is 20 kilometers southwest of Ostrava near Mošnov . Since then, this venue and the period (September) have been retained. The permanent group of participants was expanded to include Czech customs . A Mi-24 held the first air show in the history of the event. The only partner that year was the United Kingdom , with 25,000 visitors.

2004

In addition to Poland and the United Kingdom in 2004 for the first time directly NATO was involved, the one as AWACS - reconnaissance aircraft used Boeing E-3 turned available. 40,000 people attended NATO Day that year.

2005

That year Poland and the UK remained the only partners. Among other things, the English multi-purpose combat aircraft Tornado F.3 , Czech main battle tanks T-72M4CZ and armored personnel carriers BVP-2 as well as the multi-purpose helicopters Mi-17 and W-3A were shown. 35,000 visitors were counted that day.

2006

In 2006 the United States took part in the event for the first time with four F-15 air superiority fighters . Much of the aircraft on display was provided by the Royal Air Force . 55,000 people attended NATO Day.

2007

In addition to the previous partners, Germany , Italy and Spain were added that year. The Eurofighter Typhoon , the Saab 39 and the F-16 and F-18 were shown for the first time. A Boeing C-17 and the Israeli Merkava battle tank were also on display . The number of visitors reached 60,000 that year.

2008

For the first time France , the Netherlands and Ukraine took part. Among other things, the An-124 transport aircraft was exhibited. In that year, the number of visitors fell to 40,000 due to the weather.

2009

In 2009 the event was renamed NATO Days in Ostrava and expanded to two days. 135,000 visitors met the new partner nations Belgium , Denmark , Greece and Romania that year . The C-5 Galaxy large-capacity transport aircraft was exhibited .

2010

Since 2010, the event weekend has been called NATO Days in Ostrava and Days of the Air Force of the Army of the Czech Republic . For the first time Austria and Hungary took part. 185,000 visitors were also able to see the long-range B-52 bomber this time .

2011

In 2011, 225,000 visitors met the new partner nations Israel , Latvia , Norway , Sweden and Turkey . That year the German ZUZ showed its skills for the first time in cooperation with Czech special forces - by then the second time in its history and the first time outside of Germany.

2012

New partner nations were Estonia , Lithuania , Slovenia and Switzerland . 208,000 visitors saw more than 20 nations for the first time.

2013

In 2013 the event marked the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Czech Republic . Among other things, an air refueling of a Czech Saab 39 by a Swedish KC-130 tanker was seen by 145,000 visitors.

2014

Since 2014, a partner nation has had the opportunity to present itself more intensively to visitors on an exclusive area at the airport. This first exclusive partner nation was Poland in 2014. Next were 225,000 visitors including the tiltrotor - convertible aircraft CV-22B consider. For the first time, the Czech President Miloš Zeman and Finland also took part in the NATO Days with an F-18.

2015

In 2015, 225,000 visitors were able to see Jordan as a participating nation for the first time . As an exclusive partner, Sweden exhibited several historic aircraft that year ( Saab 29 , Saab 35 , Saab 37 , Saab 105 ). The Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist and the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Petr Pavel were also present .

2016

Germany was an exclusive partner nation in 2016. The long-range B-1 bomber and the A400M transport aircraft were exhibited for the first time. The exhibition of 20 helicopters from different nations was also special. Due to the weather, there was a drop in visitor numbers on the first of the two NATO days, which totaled 130,000.

2017

In 2017 Slovakia was an exclusive partner nation. For the first time Canada and Saudi Arabia with the Saudi Hawks were among the 17 participating nations. More than 80 aircraft and 200 land vehicles were exhibited. A weather-related flight ban on the second day of the event had an immediate impact on the number of visitors, which was only 90,000 that year.

2018

Around 225,000 people attended the event, which that year marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state of Czechoslovakia . The exclusive partner was the United States of America, which exhibited the UH-1Y “Venom” for the first time . A total of 20 nations took part in the NATO Days.

2019

In 2019, Romania was the exclusive partner nation at the NATO Days, which were attended by 220,000 people. 17 nations exhibited military technology, including a C5-M "Super Galaxy" from the United States Air Force . Another part of the program was a joint jump of 40 Polish and Czech paratroopers.

organizer

The event is organized by Jagello 2000 , a Czech association for Euro-Atlantic cooperation, which advocates NATO's security policy and the strengthening of transatlantic relations. Also involved are the armed forces of the Czech Republic , the Czech police , Ostrava airport and the fire and rescue service (Zdravotnická záchranná služba Moravskoslezského kraje) of the Moravskoslezský kraj.

Supporters are the city of Ostrava, the military aircraft manufacturer Aero and Škoda Auto . The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and almost 80 other sponsors are also involved as organizers.
