NGC 6940 is a galactic open star cluster in the constellation Vulpecula . In the Trumpler classification it is assigned to type III 2 m or III 2 r: It is therefore a delimited cluster with no recognizable concentration, the stars are roughly evenly distributed (III); it shows a medium brightness distribution, so the stars are not all of similar brightness, but also not very differently bright (2); and it contains a medium or large number of stars (m / r). NGC 6940 has an apparent magnitude of 6.3 mag and an angular diameter of around half a degree, which roughly corresponds to the apparent diameter of the full moon.
The object was discovered on July 17, 1784 by William Herschel .
