NGC 6943 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type SBc in the constellation Peacock on southern sky . It is estimated to be 284 million light years from the Milky Way and about 165,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 6945 .
The supernovae SN 1998ew (Type II) and SN 2005av (Type IIn) were observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on June 27, 1835 .
