Nadezhda Nikolayevna Gernet ( Russian Надежда Николаевна Гернет ; born April 6 . Jul / 18th April  1877 greg. In Simbirsk , † 1943 in Leningrad ) was a Russian - Soviet mathematician and university lecturer .

Life

Gernet came from a noble family . Her father Nikolai A. Gernet had joined the revolutionaries in his youth . In 1868 he was arrested after the Karakosov trial and exiled after imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress to Totma , where he became friends with the exiled Pyotr Lavrovich Lavrov of Narodnaya Volya . In February 1870 he had organized the escape with German Alexandrowitsch Lopatin and had now been exiled to Ardatow in the Simbirsk governorate . Gernet's mother, Nadezhda Nikolajewna Gernet, was an elementary school teacher. In 1892 Gernet was accepted into the Simbirsk grammar school. When she graduated in spring 1894, she received the gold medal.

Gernet studied in St. Petersburg in the higher Bestuschewskije kursy for women at the physical - mathematical faculty with graduation in 1898. Then she studied at the University of Göttingen with David Hilbert with doctorate in 1901 (Dr. phil.). She now taught in the Bestuschewskije kursy. In 1915 Gernet successfully defended her dissertation on the main task of calculus of variations at the University of Moscow for her doctorate in the Magistra of Mathematics . She now taught as a professor in the Bestuschewskije kursy as the second woman in Russia after Sofja Wassiljewna Kowalewskaja .

After the October Revolution , Gernet became a professor at Leningrad University in 1919 . One of her students was I. Grekowa .

From 1929 Gernet worked in the Leningrad Electromechanical Institute. From 1930 she taught at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute . In 1934 she switched to the industrial institute. She was a member of the Moscow Mathematical Society .

Gernet died in blocked Leningrad to dystrophy and was on the Lutheran Smolensk cemetery buried.

The lawyer Mikhail Nikolajewitsch Gernet was Gernets older brother.
