The National Museum Taras Shevchenko ( Ukrainian Націона́льний музе́й Тара́са Шевче́нка ) is a museum in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, dedicated to the life and work of the painter and Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko .

location

The museum is located in the Kiev district of Shevchenko on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard number 12 in the Tereschenka City Palace from 1841.

History of the museum

The museum opened on April 24, 1949. From 1982 to 1989 the museum was closed due to renovation and restoration work and the exhibits were housed in the area of ​​the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. On March 31, 2001, the museum received the status of a “national museum”.

Museum building

The building was built in 1841. In 1875 it was acquired by the Kiev sugar producer and philanthropist Mykola Artemijowytsch Tereschtschenko (1819–1903) and converted into a city palace in the style of the Italian Renaissance by the architects Peter Fedorow and Ronald Tustanowskij .

collection

The museum exhibits works by famous painters, sculptors, writers and composers from the time of Shevchenko about his life and work. Among others by the painters: Karl Bryullov , Mykhaylo Derehus , Ivan Jischakewytsch , Vasyl Kasijan , Fotij Krassyzkyj , Ivan Kramskoi , Mikhail Mikeshin , Ilya Repin , Mykola Samokysch , Ivan Sokolov , Ivan Soschenko , Vasily Sternberg , Karpo Trochymenko , Vasily Tropinin and Konstantin Trutowski as well as works by the sculptors: Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg , Wladimir Beklemischew and Mychajlo Lyssenko and others.
