The Hotova-Dangell National Park ( Albanian  Parku Kombëtar Bredhi i Hotovës-Dangelli ; in German the Hotova-Dangell fir ) is located in the east of the municipality of Përmet in southern Albania near the border with Greece . It is the largest national park in Albania.

The national park stretches in a remote mountain region between the Vjosatal near Përmet in the west, Leskovik in the south, Erseka in the southeast and the Osum valley near Çorovoda in the northeast. There are numerous villages within the area. The village of Frashër in the heart of the national park is well known.

The southern foothills of the park stretch to Çarshova  and also include several breakthrough valleys. In Petran  lying Lengarica -Schlucht with famous thermal springs.

The park is best accessed from Përmet , the nearest town.

history

Originally established in 1996, the national park only covered an area of ​​1200 hectares in a side valley of the Vjosa . It was expanded to 34,361 hectares in 2008. A small part of 1195.8 hectares is located in the municipality of Kolonja .

flora

The national park consists essentially of a significant population of Macedonian pine ( Pinus peuce ), a relic of the great forests around the Mediterranean in ancient times. In addition to the pines, other species are also found: maples , black hornbeams , holm oaks , red and black junipers , raspberries and others. Many trees are hundreds of years old.

fauna

The most common animal species include the brown bear , the wolf , the red fox , the stone marten , the wild boar , the wild rabbit , the squirrel and many others. However, the most important inhabitant of the forests is the deer , which lives in the meadows and in the depths of the forests.
