The national road 5 ( Chinese 國 道 五號 , Pinyin Guódào wǔ hào , English National freeway 5 ), also known as Chiang-wei-shui-Autobahn ( Chinese 蔣 渭水 高速公路 , Pinyin Jiǎng wèishuǐ gāosù gōnglù ) or Beiyi-Autobahn ( Chinese 北宜 高速公路 , Pinyin Běiyí gāosù gōnglù - "northern highway"), is a highway in Taiwan . The highway runs in an east-west direction in the north of the island, from Taipei to Yilan County on the east coast. It is the only highway in the country that leads to the east coast of Taiwan. The motorway is 54 kilometers long and runs through many tunnels.
Street description
The highway begins in the east of the capital Taipei on the highway that comes from Keelung and forms a southern bypass of Taipei. The highway has 2 × 2 lanes and runs through the mountainous region in the middle of the island. Large parts of the route run through tunnels. The longest tunnel is 12.9 kilometers long, two-lane Hsuehshan Tunnel . The highway then leads to the flat Yilan Plain and turns south. Here it forms a bypass of the city of Yilan . Further south the highway ends at Luodong .

On December 15, 2004, the section between Shenkeng and Pinglin was opened with a series of tunnels. On January 22, 2006, the southernmost part between Toucheng and Dongshan was opened to traffic. On June 16, 2006, the Hsuehshan Tunnel opened, which at the time of opening was the longest 2 × 2-lane tunnel in the world at the time. On January 22, 2006, the section between Pinglin and Toucheng was opened. Travel time between the east coast and Taipei dropped from two hours to 40 minutes.
