The Vilsalpsee nature reserve is a nature reserve in the Tannheim Mountains in Tyrol . It extends in the municipal areas of Tannheim and Weißenbach , both Reutte district , in the Tannheimer Tal . It includes the Vilsalpsee and the higher-lying, smaller bodies of water, the Traualpsee , the Lache and the Alplsee with the surrounding mountain range, and altitudes from 1160 to 2274 m.

History, size and protection goals

The area around the Vilsalpsee has been under nature protection since 1957 .

In 1995 it was proposed as a Natura 2000 area, expanded to that effect as a nature reserve in 1998, and from 2000 onwards it was designated both as an FFH area according to the Habitats Directive and as a European bird protection area according to the Birds Directive (site code AT3302000).

In 2002 the area was enlarged to 1,829  hectares .

In 2009, the protective purpose required according to § 21  Z.2 Tyrolean Nature Conservation Act 2005 (TNSchG 2005) was subsequently announced:

"The following conservation goals are set for the Natura 2000 area Vilsalpsee:
1. Preservation of alpine limestone habitats,
2. Preservation of alpine lawns ,
3. Preservation of subalpine and high-montane forests,
4. Preservation of habitats in and around the Vilsalpsee lakes, Traualpsee, Lache and Alplsee,
5. Protection and promotion of characteristic bird species […], and preservation and promotion of characteristic species and habitats […], whereby these […] are to be brought to a favorable conservation status if necessary. "

Flora and fauna

Characteristic bird species are particularly golden eagle , eagle owl , black woodpecker and pygmy owl , as other species and habitats (ie after the Habitats Directive) are called lady's slipper , limestone and shale rubble halden , species-rich Nardus grasslands - montane calcareous fens , peat forests , tufa sources, Alpine calcareous grasslands , underwater vegetation of rivers of Submontanstufe and the level Fluthahnenfuß , alpine rivers and their banks trees with frost pasture , wet Hochstaudenfluren , alpine rivers and their herbaceous riparian vegetation, acidophilous spruce forests , limestone scree in Central Europe, mountain hay meadows , calcareous waters with vegetation of Chara stocks and alpine and subalpine heathland .

The mountain forests are also home to the capercaillie , as well as black and three-toed woodpeckers, and next to sparrows also the rough owl . Above the tree line there are other mountain pipits , rock ptarmigan and peregrine falcons . There are also marmots , chamois and red grouse . The species on the red list include the kestrel , green woodpecker and barn swallow . In Gappenfelder Notländ live on the eastern edge of the area grouse .

Other plants that grow in the nature reserve are Alpine pasque flower , gold pippau , mountain dandelion , real moon rue and pink spherical orchids .
