Neil Fachie , MBE , (born March 12, 1984 in Aberdeen ) is a Scottish athlete with a visual impairment who competes in various sports.
Athletic career
Neil Fachie, who suffers from retinopathia pigmentosa , a retinal degeneration , studied physics at the University of Aberdeen . There he started athletics and qualified for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing at the age of 24 , where he competed in the 100 and 200 meter runs . After he couldn't get a podium there, he decided to switch to cycling .
The British cycling coaches were immediately impressed by Fachie's good physical condition. He trained with the British national paracycling team in September 2008 and became a member of it in April 2009. In the same year he started together with pilot Barney Storey at the World Track Championships in Manchester on the tandem in the time trial and sprint and won the gold medal in both disciplines; In the time trial, the two set a new world record with 1: 02.217 minutes. Two years later he took part with Craig MacLean as a pilot at the World Railroad Championships in Montichiari , where he again won gold twice, in addition to a new world record of 10.282 seconds over 200 meters in qualification in the sprint. At his third World Track Championships in 2012, Fachie drove again with Storey and won silver over the 1000 meters.
In the same year, Storey and Fachie competed at the Paralympics in London . In the time trial, the two athletes secured the gold medal with a world record time of 1: 01.351 minutes. They won silver in the sprint.
For the 2014 World Track Championships in Aguascalientes , Mexico , Neil Fachie formed a team with pilot Peter Mitchell , with whom he won two gold medals in the sprint and time trial. Fachie and Mitchell broke the record set by Fachie and Storey at the 2012 Paralympics for over 1000 meters with a time of 59.460 seconds, making them the first tandem pair to stay under a minute. In 2015 at the World Championships in Apeldoorn , Fachie and Mitchell again won two gold medals in sprint and time trial. At the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , the two athletes jointly won the silver medal over the 1000 meters on the track.
With Craig MacLean, Fachie won silver in both sprint and time trial at the 2017 World Track Championships ; In 2018 he won gold in both disciplines with Matthew Rotherham . Fachie and Rotherham also won these competitions at the 2018 Commonwealth Games , where they competed for Scotland. At the 2019 World Championships in Apeldoorn , the two athletes won gold in the sprint and silver in the time trial.
Honors
In 2013, Neil Fachie was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In June of the same year he got from Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall , here Duchess of Rothesay , the honorary doctorate awarded the University of Aberdeen.
