Nestor-Severineanul Vornicescu (born October 1, 1927 in Lozova ; † May 17, 2000 in Craiova ) was a Romanian Orthodox theologian , priest , librarian , abbot , monastery provost , episcopal vicar , metropolitan of Oltenia and church historian .

Life

Vornicescu came from the farming family of Vasile and Vera Vornicescu in Bessarabia . After attending elementary school , he completed an apprenticeship at the seminar of the Neamt monastery from 1946 to 1948 . From 1948 to 1951 he attended the higher seminar at the same monastery school. From 1951 to 1955 he studied theology in Bucharest , where he also attended doctoral lectures. From 1955 to 1958 he continued his education at Swiss training centers in Bossey and Geneva .

He performed his church service from 1946 to 1951 in the Nechit hermitage in Neamț County . On March 10, 1950, he entered the monastery and was ordained a priest . From 1950 to 1962 he worked as a priest at the Bishop's Cathedral of Iași and as a librarian in the metropolis there. From 1960 to 1966 he held the post of abbot in the monastery of St. John in Suceava . He was ordained provost by Metropolitan Moisescu on August 2, 1962, and headed the Neam 196 monastery from March 25, 1966 to December 15, 1970 . On December 27, 1970 Metropolitan Firmilian of Oltenia consecrated him as Episcopal Vicar of Craiova . On April 23, 1978 he became Metropolitan of Oltenia.

Vornicescu was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and participant of the IV. To VI. All-Christian Peace Assembly 1971 to 1985 in Prague , belonged to its presidium since 1985 and was one of its vice-presidents .

Nestor Vornicescu published numerous books, articles and studies of patristic historical and ecumenical content. These publications were made both at home and abroad. He took part in numerous congresses and other church events: in Madrid , Helsinki , Moscow , Sofia , Jerusalem , Budapest , Prague, Warsaw , Athens , Kiev , New York , Sydney , New Delhi and other places.

He was chairman of the Synodal Commission of Canon Law for Romanian Saints and chairman of the Romanian National Commission for Comparative Church History . In 1966 he was elected honorary member of the Romanian Academy .

Nestor Vornicescu died in hospital on May 17, 2000 as a result of a heart attack .
