The Neue Residenz is a multi-wing, listed building on Domplatz in Bamberg in Upper Franconia . From 1602 it was the residence of the Bamberg prince-bishops and replaced the old court on the other side of the square in this function. Today the sandstone complex houses the State Library and State Gallery of Bamberg. From the rose garden of the Neue Residenz you have a view of the Michaelskirche and the roofs of the town.

history

The new residence was created with its four-wing division into two construction phases. First, under Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Gebsattel , the rear two-wing part was built in the Renaissance style from 1602, and the front baroque part between 1697 and 1703 under Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn with the help of Leonhard Dientzenhofer . From 1803 it was a royal residence.

Since 1803

On June 1, 1815, the Bamberg residence was the scene of one of the last episodes of the Napoleonic era: Louis-Alexandre Berthier , a Napoleonic marshal , was killed there by falling from one of the upper windows. He chose suicide because he did not want to fall into the hands of the advancing Russian army . A memorial plaque in the middle of Residenzstrasse commemorates the event.

The residence served as exile for the abdicated Greek royal couple Otto I and Amalie from 1862 to 1867 and 1875, respectively .

The Neue Residenz was once again the scene of Bavarian history for a short time when the elected government under Prime Minister Hoffmann and the state parliament moved to Bamberg in 1919 . The first democratic Bavarian constitution was passed in the Hall of Mirrors of Harmony on Schillerplatz.

State Gallery

The State Gallery in the New Residence is a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections . One of the most famous paintings in the collection is Hans Baldung Grien's painting The Deluge .

rose Garden

The rose garden between the wings of the residence is a place of relaxation for locals and guests of the city. It grants a view to the east over the urban landscape and the Jura heights.

Before the rose garden was established, there was a renaissance garden on the site in the 16th century , which was converted into a baroque garden in 1733 under Prince-Bishop Friedrich Carl von Schönborn . The planning of the garden was entrusted to the builder Balthasar Neumann . The rococo-style garden pavilion was designed by the builder Johann Jakob Michael Küchel . The sculptures from the thematic area of ancient mythology (made in 1760 and 1761) come from Ferdinand Tietz .

4,500 roses bloom on the beds bordered by box hedges. A memorial for Otto I and his wife Amalie with an inscription in Greek and German is located in a blind arch in the wall.
