Neugarz was founded in 1773/74 after the Dosse was dyed. As in the neighboring village of Altgarz, the place name goes back to a historical field name. In 1775 ten families were settled in Neugarz as hop growers. At that time, Neugarz belonged to the Electoral Brandenburg Office Neustadt an der Dosse and belonged to the Ruppinian Circle . From 1815, the administrative unit in the Prussian province of Brandenburg was continued as the Ruppin district . On April 1st, 1936 Neugarz was incorporated into Altgarz .
After the administrative reform in the GDR in July 1952, Neugarz belonged to the Kyritz district in the Potsdam district until January 1, 1958, and then to the Rathenow district . On May 1, 1974 Altgarz was incorporated with Neugarz into the community of Großderschau . After reunification , Neugarz belonged to the Rathenow district until December 1993 , which was finally merged with the Nauen district to form today's Havelland district.
