Nick D'Virgilio (born November 12, 1968 ) is an American drummer , singer and guitarist from Hacienda Heights near Los Angeles .

As a studio and live musician, he has worked with some of the big names in the music business. Among other things, he is on the last studio album "Calling All Stations" by the British band Genesis as a replacement for the retired Phil Collins and since The Difference Machine (2007) on all albums of Big Big Train , where he has been a permanent member of the band since 2009 Listen. His other projects include Peter Gabriel , Kevin Gilbert , Sheryl Crow as well as Agents of Mercy and Karmakanic (both projects by the Swedish Flower Kings guitarist Roine Stolt ). He is also the current touring drummer for Tears for Fears , the progressive metal band Fates Warning and 2010 Cirque du Soleil , and he plays drums on the albums "The Man Left In Space" (2013) and "The Unreasonable" Silence "(2016) by Cosmograf.

His main engagement, however, was the American progressive rock band Spock's Beard , where he was active as a drummer since it was founded in 1994. From 2002 he also took over the post of lead singer and second guitarist as the successor to Neal Morse . The band's style is based on great role models from the 1970s such as Genesis , Yes , Gentle Giant , Kansas and Emerson, Lake & Palmer . In 2011 D'Virgilio left the band due to his numerous other commitments.

D'Virgilio's voice is characterized by above-average flexibility. As the second vocalist on Spock's Beard, he was responsible for vocal lines in high, falsetto-like tone regions, while his spectrum on the younger albums tends to include a tenor range. His musical roots are varied, the greatest inspirations are, according to his own statement, Genesis, Led Zeppelin , James Brown , Stevie Wonder , Kevin Gilbert and Miles Davis .

In 2008 he dared to reinterpret the complete Genesis double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in collaboration with producer Mark Hornsby as lead singer and drummer . The work called Rewiring Genesis: A Tribute To The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was recorded by selected musicians from Nashville with strong echoes of swing.

There are two solo releases by Nick D'Virgilio (under the abbreviation NDV ): On Karma (2001) he plays all the instruments himself, the live album Live & Acoustic (2003) is also available in a DVD version.
