Nick Shay Deutsch (* 1972 in Petach-Tikva , Israel ) is an Australian oboist and university professor.

At the age of 13, German began studying at the Conservatory of Music in Sydney , later at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne with Anne Gilby, where he graduated and was awarded the Gwen Nisbet Prize for the most outstanding student in 1993. A scholarship enabled him to study further with Diethelm Jonas at the State University of Music in Trossingen .

From 2003 to 2010 Nick Deutsch was principal oboist in the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra . From 2004 to 2010 he was professor of oboe at the Mainz University of Music , and since 2010 he has held the same position at the Leipzig University of Music and Theater and Artistic Director at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM).

As principal oboist he has worked with orchestras such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe , Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt and other orchestras in Cologne, Stuttgart, Berlin and Munich, with the Operas in Munich , Berlin, Dresden , Hamburg, Cologne, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Bayreuth, Stuttgart, Oslo and Tel Aviv under world-famous conductors such as Zubin Mehta , James Levine , Kurt Masur , Lorin Maazel , Sir Simon Rattle , Kyrill Petrenko , Gustavo Dudamel , Semjon Bychkov and Iván Fischer . He appears regularly as principal oboist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and was a member of the Budapest Festival Orchestra from 2004 to 2011.

As a soloist, he played with orchestras such as the Camerata Salzburg , the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen , the Bach Kollegium Stuttgart, the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra, the Polish Chamber Philharmonic, the Real Filharmonia de Galicia (Spain) and the Munich Chamber Orchestra . As a chamber musician, he is a founding member of the Hindemith Quintet in Frankfurt am Main and has performed with the Ensemble Modern, the Linos Ensemble and the Cappella Andrea Barca founded by András Schiff .
