Nikolai Ulfsten

Nikolai Martin Ulfsten , also Nicolai Ulfsten , originally Nikolai Martin Nielsen (born September 29, 1854 in Bergen , Norway , † December 24, 1885 in Christiania , Norway), was a Norwegian landscape and genre painter .

Life

Ulfsten, son of the merchant Niels Nielsen and his wife Marthe Malene Sjursdatter Dahle, went to Düsseldorf in 1874 after a short stay at Knud Bergslien's painting school under Peder Cappelen Thurmann , where he stayed for about four months and studied at the Düsseldorf painting school . Then he moved on to Karlsruhe . He was a student of Karl Gussow and Hans Fredrik Gude at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School there . In 1879 he traveled to Italy and Egypt , in 1881 to Constantinople and in 1884 to Algeria . Orientalist paintings come from these trips . However, he was best known for Nordic beach scenes. He sent his pictures to numerous exhibitions, such as the Centennial Exhibition Philadelphia in 1876 and the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878 as well as the Salon de Paris from 1879 to 1882. On May 1, 1883, he married Bolette Helene Hedevig Jebe (1860-1894) in Bergen. The painter Amaldus Nielsen was one of his close friends .
