Nikolaus Esterházy
Baron, later Count Nikolaus Esterházy de Galantha (Hungarian: Esterházy Miklós ) (born April 8, 1582 or 1583 in Galanta ; † September 11, 1645 in Großhöflein ) was the son of the vice spans of the Preßburg County Ferenc Esterházy de Galántha (1533-1604) and his wife Zsófia Illesházy de Illesháza (* 1547, † 1599). He was the founder of the West Hungarian magnate family Esterházy and transformed it from a small Hungarian noble family into one of the greatest aristocratic families in the Kingdom of Hungary .
The Habsburgs became aware of Baron Nikolaus after he was one of the few aristocrats in Hungary who converted to Catholicism out of conviction and who invested a lot of courage and strength in fighting and defending against the Turks .
His first marriage in 1612 with Ursula / Orsolya Dersffy de Szerdahely brought him a huge fortune as well as the dominions of Mukatschewo (Munkatsch, Hungarian: Munkács) and Landsee - Lackenbach . After he had to cede the rule of Mukatschewo to Gábor Bethlen due to the Nikolsburg Peace in 1622 , instead of financial compensation he received two new dominions from the emperor, namely the rule Forchtenstein including the title of count and the rule Eisenstadt .
In 1625 the Pressburg Reichstag made him Palatine , the highest state dignitary in royal Hungary. Just one year later he was raised to the status of hereditary count of Forchtenstein as comes perpetuus de Franknó .
He was the father of Count Ladislaus Esterházy and the later Prince Paul I. Esterházy .
