Ivan III Count Drašković von Trakošćan ( German Johann , Hungarian János ; born March 13, 1595 (?) Or 1603 in Trakošćan , Croatia ; † August 5, 1648 in Magyaróvár ) was a Croatian nobleman , general and statesman from the Drašković family . He was Ban (Viceroy) of Croatia from 1640 to 1646.

Life

Ivan III Drašković was born as the son of Ivan II Baron Drašković and his wife Eva Drašković born. Istvánffy Baranyavár and Kissasszonyfalva was born. His father (* 1550 - † 1613) was known as the Ban of Croatia (from 1596 to 1608), as well as Emperor Rudolf II. Treasurer , secretary and court war councilor, general of the cavalry and chief clan of the Kreutz county .

On January 29, 1629, he married Barbara Thurzo , Countess of Bethelsdorf (Hungarian: Bethlenfalvi Thurzó , Slovak: Turzo z Betlanoviec ), still a baron, and they had five children: Ivan IV , Barbara, Nikola II, Katarina and Julija.

Drašković studied philosophy in Graz (Austria) and law in Bologna (Italy), speaking several foreign languages. During his life, the noble family Drašković reached the height of their power, wealth and influence. As he was successful in many battles against the Turks, he became known as "defensor Croatiae" (defender of Croatia). He endeavored to improve the organization of the defense and at the same time ensured that new fortifications were built and many old military bases were renovated and strengthened.

Because of his efforts and achievements, he and the other members of his family were elevated to the rank of count on September 4, 1631 by Emperor and King Ferdinand II of Habsburg . In his life Drašković was, among other things, Rittmeister , Royal Chamberlain and Privy Councilor . On July 10, 1640 he was appointed Emperor and King Ferdinand III. to the Ban of Croatia and commander in chief of the Croatian military border in Karlovac .

On September 22, 1646, Ferdinand III appointed. the general assembly of the Croatian and Hungarian nobility in Pressburg and announced there that Drašković was appointed Palatine of Hungary . This was Ivan III. Drašković was the first Croat to hold this highest Hungarian title (after that of king). A relatively short time later he died on August 5, 1648 in Altenburg an der Leitha (Magyaróvár) and was buried in the Cathedral of St. Martin in Pressburg, next to his father Ivan II Drašković .
