history
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Under the Romans, today's Großhöflein was then in the province of Pannonia .
On the Föllig (286 meters) finds from the Neolithic , Bronze Age and the time of the Roman Empire were made. Großhöflein has been a market town since 1701. Like all of Burgenland, it belonged to Hungary ( Sopron county ) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Nagyhöflány be used.
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

Parish council
In addition to Mayor Heinz Heidenreich (SPÖ) and Deputy Mayor Maria Zoffmann (ÖVP), Norbert Fenk (SPÖ), Werner Huf (FLG), Barbara Neuhser (SPÖ), Horst Ondrag (ÖVP) and Wolfgang Steiner (SPÖ) also belong to the community board.
mayor
Mayor is Heinz Heidenreich (SPÖ). He prevailed in the mayoral election on February 8, 2015 with 50.2% of the votes against Sylvia Unger (LBL, 49.8%). The election became necessary after Mayor Wolfgang Rauter (LBL) resigned from his position in September 2014 after only two years in office. The runoff election became necessary because in the first ballot on January 11, 2015, with Johann Zonschits (ÖVP) as the third applicant, no candidate achieved a qualified majority.
In the mayoral election on October 1, 2017, Heidenreich once again had two competitors, Maria Zoffmann (ÖVP) and Andreas Kuchelbacher (FLG). Kuchelbacher even entered the election with the promise to make his mayor's salary (around 47,000 euros annually) available for social, sporting and cultural activities in the clubs and community citizens in need. Nevertheless, Kuchelbacher left after the first ballot with 18.02%. Heidenreich missed his election target with 49.85%, so a runoff had to take place, in which Heidenreich prevailed with 54.63% over Zoffmann (45.37%). At the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Maria Zoffmann was elected Vice Mayor.
The head of the office is Hildegard Kaiser-Landl.
