Nikolaus Messmer

Nikolaus Messmer SJ (born December 19, 1954 in Karagandy , Kazakh SSR , Soviet Union , † July 18, 2016 in Bishkek , Kyrgyzstan ) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church and Apostolic Administrator in Kyrgyzstan.

Life

Nikolaus Messmer comes from a Black Sea German family from Speier, Beresan and Kandel, Kutschurhan , who was deported to Kazakhstan under the dictatorship of Stalin . He joined the congregation of the Jesuits in 1975 , made his profession in 1978 and was ordained a priest on May 28, 1989 . After pastoral work in the parish "Archangel St. Michael" in Bishkek, the only Catholic Church in the Kyrgyz Republic, he was Rector of the Small Seminary in Novosibirsk , Russia from 1997 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2006 . From 2001 to 2004 he completed a PhD in Spirituality at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome .

Pope Benedict XVI dissolved the sui juris mission in Kyrgyzstan on March 18, 2006 under the direction of Jesuit Aleksandr Kan , set up the Kyrgyz Apostolic Administration with its seat in Bishkek , appointed Nikolaus Messmer titular Archbishop of Carmeiano on March 18, 2006 and appointed him first Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Administration of Kyrgyzstan. He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on June 2, 2006; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Józef Wesołowski , Apostolic Nuncio in Kyrgyzstan, and the Archbishop of Karaganda, Jan Pawel Lenga MIC . One of Niklaus Messmer's brothers, Otto Messmer SJ (* 1961), was murdered in Moscow on October 27, 2008. At that time he was the superior of the Jesuits in Russia. His brother Hieronymus Messmer belongs to the German Province of the Jesuits.

Nikolaus Messmer died shortly before an operation in a hospital in Bishkek .
