Nirvana (alternative title: Nirvana - The future is a game and Nirvana - Hunt in cyberspace ) is a science fiction film from 1997, directed by Gabriele Salvatores . The film opened in German cinemas on August 21, 1997.

action

The film revolves around computer game designer Jimi (Lambert) and Solo, a character in his game Nirvana . It begins in a hotel room in "Bombay City" where Jimi tries to hack into a computer system . Flashbacks then tell how he got there: When Solo develops self-confidence through a computer virus , he confronts Jimi with it and finally asks him to delete it. Jimi promises it solo, but informs him that the game has since been given to the client "Okosama Star". So Jimi has to hack into their computer system. To do this, he drives to the Arab quarter of Marrakech to find the hacker joystick. At the same time, the joystick is the only clue where Jimi's ex-girlfriend Lisa is. Joystick tells him that they need the help of another hacker named Naima. They contact them and leave town in a stolen truck. When they pay with a fake credit card, Naima rescues them from the police at the last minute. The three of them are now going to Bombay City because they have to get hold of a computer virus there, which they want to expose on the Okosama Star server. At the same time, this is Lisa's last whereabouts.

In the meantime, Solo tries to convince another character, the prostitute Maria, that the world is not real. But she doesn't want to believe him.

When they arrived in Bombay City, they received the virus they were looking for from a guru and at the same time learned that Lisa had since died. Jimi receives a chip on which Lisa's memory is saved. He asks Naima, who has an access port in mind after an accident , to use the chip so he can ask her about Lisa. When agents of the Okosama Star attack the three, they break free at the last moment. The film now continues where it began: In a hotel room where Jimi tries to hack into the Okosama Star's system. He is tried by so-called DEVILS, computer programs to ward off hackers, to prevent them. When one of the DEVILS takes the form of Lisa, he almost succeeds, but Naima can tear Jimi away from the DEVIL at the last moment with Lisa's memories. With the access, Naima and Joystick can distribute black money from the Okosama Star. Now that the agents know about the whereabouts of the three, Naima and Joystick flee. Jimi stays behind and deletes the game "Nirvana" with Solo in it. The film ends with the Okosama Star agents breaking the door to Jimi's hotel room and Jimi shooting them.

Reviews

filmbessprechungen.de describes the film as a “confused journey through cyberpunk” and accuses the actors of rather pale play. Nevertheless, the film has an interesting plot that would only become apparent when you watch it a second time.

zelluloid.de classifies the film as a “confused firework of inconsistencies”.
