history
The village emerged in the 19th century as a settlement for exiles who worked there in gold mining. Mining expanded considerably from the 1920s. Nizhnyaya Shakhtama grew rapidly and received urban-type settlement status in 1936 . With the gradual depletion of the gold reserves and the development of a molybdenum deposit from 1941, the center of mining activities shifted to Vererschino-Schachtaminski (about Upper Shakhtama settlement ) a good 15 km southeast, upstream on the Schachtama . After this had also become an urban-type settlement in 1948, Nizhnyaya Shakhtama became a village again in the 1950s after the mine there was closed in 1951. The population fell from over 10,000 in 1939 to less than 3,000 in 1959 and is now only a few hundred.
