The first white farmers came to the region in the middle of the 19th century. A small settlement was built in what is now the city, which also served as a resting place for travelers.

One of the leaders of the settlers was the blacksmith Nicholas A. Inman , who had come from Tennessee in 1852. He and a partner opened a forge in the neighboring town of Ozark. His family residence was a few kilometers west in what is now the urban area of ​​Nixa. The settlement grew, more settlers and business people moved into the place and a post office was opened. The residents decided to give their settlement a name. The new place name Nixa was formed from first and middle names .

In 1902 the place was officially given the status of " Village ".

The economy was initially largely based on agriculture. Small industrial enterprises gradually developed from the processing of agricultural products. A number of mills, dairies and slaughterhouses came into being. 1924 was a cooperative cheese factory, during the Great Depression of the Wilson Packing Company was acquired.
