Noel (alternative title: Noel - Angels in Manhattan) is an American drama film directed by Chazz Palminteri from 2004 .
action
The film shows people in New York at Christmas time. Divorced publisher Rose Collins takes care of her mother, who has Alzheimer's disease . She meets the former priest Charly Boyd, who saves her life when she stands on the river bank and plays with thoughts of suicide. They spend Christmas Eve together in their apartment and he tells her that as a priest he has lost faith in God. The next morning he tells her that he telepathically contacted her mother and that she told him Rose should go on with her life. He adds that he now believes in God again. Rose gets angry about it and throws him out of the apartment.
The couple Mike Riley and Nina Vasquez have a relationship crisis because the cop Riley is jealous of all the men around Ninas. When he attacks a homosexual platonic friend Ninas, she leaves him. She goes to her family to celebrate Christmas there. She meets Rose, who has secretly sneaked into her parents' house, and confides her story to her. Then the two of them go to a bar nearby, as they don't really feel they belong.
The older waiter Artie Venizelos is waiting for his wife, although she is already dead. He's molesting Riley; he thinks this is his wife's reincarnation. When Venizelos collapses and is rushed to the hospital, Riley learns from a colleague that Venizelos has committed manslaughter out of jealousy. As a result, Venizelos' wife caused a car accident in which she was fatally injured. Riley sees this as a sign of fate that he must overcome his pathological jealousy.
Jules Calvert is also depressed. In his memory, the best Christmas he has ever had was a hospital celebration when he was 14 years old. To repeat the experience, he lets the criminal "Arizona" break his hand. When he appears in the hospital, however, he finds that he cannot revive the past. Rose Collins feels guilty about her behavior towards Boyd. She returns to the hospital and discovers that Charly Boyd is in a coma in the room next to her mother's room . So she met his mind on the riverbank. Rose is determined to no longer just be there for her mother, but to participate in life again; she arranges a date with one of the doctors.
Riley asks Nina Vasquez for forgiveness. He promises her to fight his jealousy. She forgives him and tells him that she is pregnant.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on November 12, 2004 that the film tells the "usual" story of estranged people seeking happiness. Only a cynical person could not like the film and “maybe because of that” he would not like the film. He could be sentimental “under the right circumstances”, but this film seems like “a challenge” to him.
In its November 12, 2004 review, the Los Angeles Times wondered why Chazz Palminteri chose this script for his directorial debut and why such renowned actors as Susan Sarandon played it.
