Noored kotkad (in German Young Eagles ) is the title of an Estonian silent film from 1927.

action

Estonia shortly after the end of the First World War : the young republic proclaimed its independence from Soviet Russia . Now it is being put to the test and has to assert its independence militarily in the Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920) against the old rulers. Three young men join the Estonian Armed Forces ( Eesti Rahvavägi ) as war volunteers : a farmer's son, a blacksmith and a student. Together they are sent on exploration missions and have to prove themselves in battles. They can repel the enemy in bitter battles with courage, bravery and a few ruses. The farmer falls in the decisive battle, the other two return home. Together they are now setting up the young state of Estonia.

Emergence

The war film was shot for the Siirius Film production company in Tartu in the summer of 1927 (film studio in the courtyard of Luts' house on Aia tänav 19) and at locations in Tartumaa , near Mustvee , Värska and Petserimaa . The director was Theodor Luts , one of the most renowned Estonian directors of the interwar period . He himself fought in the Estonian War of Independence, including the battles of Paju and Cēsis .

The original length of the film is about one hundred minutes. In the original the film has ten parts, eight of which have been preserved. The film was shot on 35 mm. Luts developed the negative in his laboratory in Tartu. The Geyer works in Berlin made the copies .

Noored kotkad was Luts' first feature film - and after the tragic comedy Kevade unelm by Voldemar Päts, it was the first real feature film from Estonia at all. Luts wrote the script together with his wife Aksella and (after the film advertisement) with his brother, the well-known folk writer Oskar Luts . The male choir of the Vanemuine Theater and members of the Estonian armed forces acted as extras in the crowd scenes .

Original music for Noored kotkad has not survived . It is known that pieces of music by Estonian composers were put together. The orchestra of the premiere cinema Gloria-Palace under the direction of Voldemar Tago played at the first performances in Tallinn .

reception

The premiere took place on November 19, 1927 in the Tartu cinema "Apollo". The film was first shown in Tallinn on December 14, 1927 in the “Gloria Palace” cinema.

Noored kotkad found a very positive reception among the Estonian population and in the feature pages. In particular, the subject of the Estonian War of Freedom seven years after its end and the fight against the Bolsheviks served as the founding myth of the young Estonian state. With the three main characters - a farmer, a craftsman, a student - the majority of the Estonian population, many of whom had fought for the goals of the republic themselves in the war of freedom. The mixture of exciting war film, garnished with love and Estonian humor, appealed to the audience.

The film was also exported abroad and shown in 1928 in Paris ( Les Aiglons ), Warsaw and probably also in Berlin ( The Three Young Eagles ). The film was not banned during the Soviet occupation of Estonia, but it was also not released in theaters.

digitalization

Noored kotkad was restored in Estonia and Finland in 2008 and digitized with a total length of 87 minutes. The restored version with a new musical version premiered on February 22, 2008. Aare Tammsesalu put together the new film music from pieces by Estonian composers ( Heino Eller , Artur Kapp , Villem Kapp , Raimund Kull , Villem Reimann ).
