The city council meeting of Schwerin decided on March 31, 2008 to carry out a referendum on April 27, in which the residents of the city should decide on the election of Claussens. The mayor was criticized mainly because of the statements made to the press and an allegedly slow process of coming to terms with the starvation of five-year-old Lea-Sophie from the Lankow district . The people of Schwerin voted out Claussen as Lord Mayor on April 27, 2008 by referendum with 82.7%, which corresponds to 29,150 votes. The turnout was 44.0%.
