Johannes Kwaschik (born September 30, 1948 in Lutherstadt Wittenberg ) is a German theologian and politician ( SPD ). From 1990 to 2002 he was Lord Mayor of Schwerin .

biography

Kwashik is the son of a preacher and a pastor. He attended the extended secondary school in Torgau . During his school days, he trained as an agricultural engineer . After graduating from high school, he studied chemistry from 1967 to 1969 at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . In 1969 he went to study the Protestant theology at the Catechetical Seminar Naumburg . There he passed the First Theological Examination in 1975. From September 1975 to August 1976 he was a student assistant in the office of the Evangelical Student Congregation in East Berlin . Immediately afterwards he did the one-year vicariate( Repetentur ) in Naumburg (Saale) . He passed the second theological examination in August 1978 in Magdeburg. He was an assistant in Naumburg for a year and was im. Ordained November 1978 .

From August 1979 he was pastor in Bad Schmiedeberg . In August 1986 he was appointed rector of the catechetical training center in Schwerin.

After the reunification and peaceful revolution in the GDR , he was one of the founders of the SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . After the Bundestag election in 1990 he successfully ran for the office of mayor of Schwerin . He was released from church service. From 1990 to 2002 he was Vice President of the German Association of Towns and Municipalities .

In early 1999 the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Party of Democratic Socialism unsuccessfully voted out Kwaschik. He did not run again in 2002; his successor was Norbert Claussen (CDU). Kwashik's tenure is linked to the successful redevelopment of the city in the center and in many parts of the city.

Since 2002 he has been volunteering in the Workers' Samaritan Association in Berlin. He was also on the board of the Froebel Association in Potsdam.
From 2006 he was a member and from 2008 to 2018 chairman of the supervisory board of the Diakonie group Oberlinhaus in Potsdam - Babelsberg .
