Norbert Krebs
Norbert Krebs (born August 29, 1876 in Leoben , † December 5, 1947 in Berlin ) was an Austrian geographer and university professor whose main research interests were Central European geography and the concept of living space .
Life
Krebs studied geography and history with Albrecht Penck and Eduard Suess at the University of Vienna from 1896 to 1902 , where he received his doctorate in 1900. In addition to his work as a teacher at a middle school , he was from 1909 private lecturer in geography at the University of Vienna. In 1917 he became a full professor of geography in Würzburg , in 1918 in Frankfurt am Main and in 1920 in Freiburg im Breisgau . From 1927 to 1943 he was a full professor of geography at the University of Berlin .
In 1937, Krebs published his monumental work "Atlas of the German Habitat in Central Europe" on behalf of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences , in which he propagated the ideas of Greater Germany and a unified "German cultural area" and the concept of " Habitat ". The territorial claims of a coherent Central European area for the German people encompassed areas from Russia to England and from Denmark to Italy, which Krebs summarized as a "space unified by language and culture". Krebs and his former teacher Penck were thus involved in the creation of the biological habitat concept that was later used by the Nazi regime as a template for settlement and expansion policy under the term " Habitat in the East ".
From 1943 to 1946 he lived in Kritzendorf near Vienna. In 1946 he returned to Berlin, where he took over his professorship again.

In 1954 the Norbert-Krebs-Gasse in Vienna-Floridsdorf was named after him.
