Citroën Méhari Ranger

Nordex SA is a Uruguayan automobile and commercial vehicle manufacturer based in Montevideo .

history

The company was founded in 1962 by Ernesto and Jorge Soler and Nelson Guelfi.

At the beginning of the 1980s, production fell dramatically, also due to economic and political circumstances, a development that could not be absorbed until the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 2001 and 2002, production in Montevideo was interrupted and relocated to the Brazilian state of Paraná for tax reasons.

The company's workforce fluctuated strongly several times. While 360 people were employed in 2000, the company only had 170 employees in 2007 (with a capacity utilization of 35%). In contrast, 340 employees were employed in 2012 under the management of Federico de Posadas.

In 2011, 8,000 trucks were built with a production capacity of 22,000 annually. Another project was reported in September 2012.

In 2015, the Argentinian businessman acquired not only the Renault importer Santa Rosa Automotores but also a 20% stake in Nordex.

In spring 2016, production at Nordex came to a temporary standstill due to the weak economy in Brazil. Kia only resumed production at Nordex in September 2016, for which around 100 employees were hired.

In addition to Uruguay, sales markets are Argentina and Brazil . So far, over 100,000 vehicles have been built.

vehicles

Renault

Renault was the first brand to be assembled by Nordex. In the 1970s, Nordex also manufactured the Renault 12 .

Since there were capacity problems in the neighboring countries of Argentina and Brazil, Nordex began production of the Renault Express and Twingo models in 1999 (or as early as 1996 and 2000) . Another source names the models Twingo, Kangoo and Clio II . Unlike the other South American versions, the Uruguayan model had a 1-liter engine. Production originally planned until 2007 (or 2006) was stopped in 2002 due to the changed economic situation.

Renault vans and trucks are also manufactured.

NSU

Nordex has also worked with NSU since it was founded. In cooperation with NSU Motorenwerke , the company manufactured the NSU P6 between 1967 and 1970 and the NSU P10 from 1970 to 1971 . Both were passenger cars based on NSU with an independent body.

Citroën

From 1965, Nordex produced its own panel van and pick-up versions of the Citroën 2CV . While the doors and the rear structure (also the roof in the case of the panel van) were made of sheet steel, the fenders and bonnet were made by Dasur (Danrée, Soler & Bonet) and consisted of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. The frame was - unlike the original - made on a sheet metal bending machine. Another source cites the start of production in 1966 for the "3CV" model and the Ami 8 model in the 1970s.

The Citroën Méhari was produced in a Uruguayan assembly plant between 1970 and 1982, although this source does not state whether it was Nordex. Another source states that, in a joint effort, Dasur produced the body from fiberglass and Nordex the chassis , while Quintanar sold the vehicles. Of these, around 14,000 vehicles were built, 9,000 of which were exported to Argentina and the rest remained inland. A two - cylinder boxer engine with a 74 mm bore , 70 mm stroke , 602 cm³ displacement and 35  hp power drove the front wheels. The curb weight was given as 590 kg.

The Méhari Ranger represented a national specialty . With a fixed structure, the Méhari became a station wagon with large glass surfaces. The side windows in front of the doors were also striking. The rear wheel cutouts also differed from the original. This vehicle weighed 700 kg.

From 1978 onwards, Nordex manufactured the Citroen AK 400 from Argentinian and Belgian parts for the Argentinian market.

Another model produced was the Citroën BX , which has been exported to Brazil since 1992. The production of the Citroën ZX has been proven for Nordex in 1995 . Citroën cars were manufactured in Uruguay until 2002, although it is unclear whether this was also done at Nordex or only at Sevel Uruguay or Oferol .

Peugeot

At the same time as the 2CV, a pick-up version of the Peugeot 403 was produced, which was available with a petrol or diesel engine (from Indenor) and optionally as a double cab. In this model, the rear fenders and the bonnet were made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (also from Dasur ), while the sheet metal parts were mostly made by hand.

Nordex also produced the 504 and 505 models in the 1970s and early 1980s .

Nordex also produced the 205 and 306 models in the 1990s . The 205 was primarily exported to Brazil.

Aeolus

As a result of contacts established with Dongfeng Motor Corporation in 1999 , Nordex has been producing medium-sized Aeolus trucks since 2000 - with interruptions in 2001 and 2002 . According to other sources, this production didn't begin until 2005 or later.

Mahindra

Relationships with Mahindra have existed since 2002 . In July 2004, Mahindra off-road vehicle production began . The Mahindra Bolero was marketed as the Cimarron . This was a five-seat pickup with a double cab . It was available with two-wheel and four-wheel drive . A diesel engine with a displacement of 2500 cm³ and an output of 76 hp propelled the vehicles.

Geely

In October 2012 it was announced that Geely cars would also be assembled in the plant from the end of 2012 . A plant opened jointly with Geely in October 2013 should have a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles. This assembly activity ended in 2016.

Kia

Nordex has been manufacturing commercial vehicles of the Kia brand since 2010 . Production of the Kia Bongo was resumed after the temporary production standstill in 2016.

PPE

In 2017 the production of the Peugeot Expert and the Citroën Jumpy started. Initially, an annual production of 6,000 pieces is planned, the majority of which will be exported to Argentina and Brazil.
