Norman L. Allinger
Norman Louis "Lou" Allinger (born April 6, 1928 in Alameda , California - † July 8, 2020 ) was an American theoretical chemist and professor emeritus at the University of Georgia in Athens , Georgia .
Life
Allinger received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1951 and a Ph.D. in 1954 from Donald J. Cram. at the University of California, Los Angeles . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts . He served on the faculty at Wayne State University in Detroit , Michigan before becoming a professor at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia in 1969. In 1998 he retired.
Act
Allinger was a representative of computational chemistry , a branch of theoretical chemistry . He was considered a leader in the field of molecular mechanics , with the help of which the shape and energy of molecules can be calculated. His methods are used worldwide, for example in connection with ligand - receptor and enzyme - substrate interactions. Various computer programs for the calculation of molecules go back to Allinger, including the Molecular Mechanics-1 (MM1), MM2, MM3 and MM4 .
