The Popo Agie River is a small river in the US state of Wyoming . It is created by the confluence of the two source rivers North Popo Agie River and Middle Popo Agie River immediately northeast of the small town of Lander at 1598 m above sea level . From there the river meanders in a northeasterly direction. About halfway through the Popo Agie passes the small community of Hudson . It flows into the Little Wind River near the Indian settlement of Arapahoe .
The Popo Agie River got its name from the language of the Crow . The exact meaning is unclear, whether it means "river in the tall grass" ( Tall Grass River ) after growing in its valley grasses or simply "gurgling river" ( gurgling river ). The Shoshone call it Wuhnzee Ohgway or Wan-ze-gara . As far as Hudson, the Popo Agie River forms the southern border of the Wind River Indian Reservation , its lower reaches belong entirely to the reservation.
The most important tributary of the Popo Agie River is the Little Popo Agie River , which flows into the Popo Agie near Hudson. In addition, the river has only a few small tributaries such as Smith Creek . The water of the Popo Agie is used to irrigate nearby agricultural areas.
The Middle Popo Agie River , also Middle Fork Popo Agie River , has its origin in a mountain lake in the south of the Wind River Range at an altitude of about 3200 m . It flows in a predominantly northeastern direction. As it leaves the mountains, it flows through Sinks Canyon State Park . There it flows over a distance of about 400 m through a karst area underground to a spring pot, from which it continues its course. The Wyoming Highway 131 runs along the bottom 20 kilometers flow. The Middle Popo Agie River crosses the small town of Lander and unites on the northeastern outskirts with the North Popo Agie River to form the Popo Agie River . The Middle Popo Agie River has a total length of about 45 km.
The North Popo Agie River , also North Fork Popo Agie River , forms the outflow of the 3,099 m high Lonesome Lake . The 3914 m high Lizard Head Peak rises north of the mountain lake. The headwaters are in the so-called Cirque of the Towers in the south of the Wind River Range. In the upper reaches of the North Popo Agie River flows through the Shoshone National Forest in a predominantly easterly direction. The river reaches the western edge of the Wind River Basin and turns south for the last few miles. Finally after about 55 km it meets the Middle Popo Agie River .
