Northern Wedding

Northern Wedding (German: Nördliche Hochzeit) was a multi-national series of NATO maneuvers during the Cold War . The Northern Wedding maneuver took place every four years in the autumn from 1970 to 1986. Often in the same year, the military maneuvers Bold Guard took place in Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark .

The sea maneuver was based on strategic planning scenarios of NATO against the Warsaw Pact and took place in the North Atlantic , in the North Sea and Baltic Sea .

At the maneuvers from 20 September to 2 October 1970 and the West German took Naval Air Wing 1 and the Naval Air Wing 2 and the destroyer 1 (D 170) , destroyer 2 (D 171) and destroyers 4 (D 178) of the German Navy in part. From September 4 to 19, 1978, the Northern Wedding 78 maneuver took place with a total of 40,000 participants. In addition, 22 submarines and 800 aircraft from nine countries were used. The maneuver also included two amphibious landings, one on the Shetland Islands and the other in Jutland in Denmark . The US aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CV-59), the amphibious transport dock USS Austin (LPD-4) , the US destroyer USS Barry (DD-933) , the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R09) and the Dutch underground Boat HNLMS Dolfijn (S808) took part in the maneuver in the Northern European Sea . The German Navy participated, among other things, with the destroyer Lütjens (D 185) .

Nine NATO countries with 160 ships, 250 aircraft and around 25,000 soldiers took part in the major maneuver in August and September 1982. These include the US aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) , the British frigate HMS Dido (F104) and the amphibious landing ship HMS Fearless (L10) , the Dutch frigate Hr. Ms. Tromp (F801), the West German frigate Emden (F 221) and the fuel transporter Eifel (A1429).

35,000 soldiers from 10 countries took part in the military maneuver from August 1986. This included the use of 150 ships. France, which only belonged to the civilian part of NATO, also took part with two destroyers and three submarines. The maneuver included the amphibious landing of 11,000 soldiers from the USA, Great Britain and the Netherlands on five stretches of coast between Larvik and Sandefjord in Norway . The computer-aided ship-to-shore communication network OPCON (Operational Command) was also used for the first time in a major maneuver. <

The US aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) , the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R09) and the US battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) were involved in the maneuver . Also the US command ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20) , the US amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA-2) , the amphibious landing ship USS Inchon (LPH-12) , the amphibious transport dock USS Nashville (LPD-13) , the US frigate USS WS Sims (FF-1059) , the US destroyer USS Thorn (DD-988) , the US dropship USS Spartanburg County , the British destroyer HMS Liverpool (D92) , the Canadian destroyer escort HMCS Assiniboine (DDH 234 ) and the supply ship HMCS Protecteur (AOR 509) as well as the ships of the Federal Republic of Germany and Denmark belonging to the German Task Group : the destroyers Rommel (D 187) , Schleswig-Holstein (D 182) and Hesse (D 184) as well as the frigates Bremen ( F 207) , Cologne (F 211) and Peder Skram (F352) . The association was supported by the supply ship Freiburg (A 1413) and the fuel transporter Rhön (A 1443) . The German Task Group was led by the commander of the destroyer flotilla, Flotilla Admiral Konrad Ehrensberger . The British Air Force Base Kirkwall on Orkney also took VTOL - ground attack aircraft of type Harrier part.
