Nova Prata , officially Portuguese Município de Nova Prata , German new silver , is a Brazilian city in the Serra Gaúcha in the state of Rio Grande do Sul . It is around 180 km from the capital, Porto Alegre . The population was estimated to be 26,849 as of July 1, 2018. The inhabitants who live in the approximately 258.9 km² area (as of 2017) are called Nova-Pratenser (Portuguese nova-pratenses ). The population density in 2010 was 88 people per km².
geography
The city is located south of André da Rocha and Guabijú , north of Vila Flores and Fagundes Varela , east of Nova Bassano and Vista Alegre do Prata and west of Protásio Alves . The terrain is mountainous, the height is around 662 meters.
The Serra Gaúcha is predominantly basaltic , basalt quarries gave the place the nickname National Capital of Basalt .
The natural beauties include several waterfalls, one of the most famous is the Cascata da Usina Velha, about 15 km to the south, which, fed by the Rio da Prata , falls 45 meters deep. The biome is characterized by the Brazilian pine ( Araucaria angustifolia ).

City administration
Executive: In the local elections in 2016, Volnei Minozzo became city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020, who ran for the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB). He was re-elected with 62.73% of the vote. The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of 11 elected city councilors (vereadores).
