The Nowaja ( Russian Новая ) is an approximately 411 km long, northwest or left-hand tributary of the Chatanga , each in the north of the Krasnoyarsk region , Siberia and Russia ( Asia ).
course
The Novaya arises about 840 km north of the Arctic Circle on the Taimyr Peninsula . In the Taimyr Valley there , the central part of the North Siberian lowlands , it flows from the small Gawrila Lake , which is located southwest of Lake Taimyr and northwest of Lake Labasse at an altitude of about 97 m and is fed by a short stream from the east.
In the Taimyr Depression, the Nowaya, which runs through unpopulated areas with many windings, flows southward in the upper reaches and eastward in the middle reaches, after which it receives its longest tributary with the Sakharova-Rassocha . In the lower reaches it flows to the southeast. In some places it forms several arms of the river, which reunite several times, but remain separate from each other in the estuary area.
Finally, the Nowaja opens about 161 km above the Chatangamündung at 0.8 m height in the coming there from southwest Chatanga ; the Nowajamündung opposite on the far Chatangaufer Nowoletowje .
Catchment area, lakes and tributaries
The catchment area of the Novaya is about 16,500 km². Its tributaries include (viewed downstream): Middle Rassocha, Rassocha-Kaya, Massonow, Chjornaya, Sakharova-Rassocha and Bolshaya Lesnaya-Rassocha.
Climate, hydrology
The winters on the Novaya are long and extremely cold, the summers short and cold. The river is usually covered in ice from early October to May . When the permafrost thaws in summer and ice and snow melt, strong floods often occur .
Flora and fauna
The Nowaja flows through landscapes of frost rubble deserts and tundra with mosses and lichens as well as numerous lakes and swamps . Muksun ( Coregonus muksun ), salmon and trout live in the river, which is rich in fish .
