Nowe Kawkowo [ ˈnɔwɛ kafˈkɔvɔ ] ( German  Neu Kockendorf ) is a village with 550 inhabitants in Poland . It is part of the Jonkowo municipality in the Olsztyński powiat , Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, and is located about 15 km northwest of Olsztyn .

history

The place received the hand festivals in 1380. In the village there is still a farmhouse from the 18th century and a Dutch mill from the 19th century.

Village church of St. Johann Evangelist

The parish church made of bricks on a field stone base without a choir was started after 1350 and consecrated in 1380. Thorough restorations were carried out in 1790 and 1856, and renovations were also carried out in 1989. The sacristy in the north was built at the beginning of the 16th century, the vestibule in the south with the remains of a terracotta frieze around 1370. The planked tower with a clapboard tent roof dates from 1664. In 2005 the 625th anniversary of the church was celebrated . From 1818 to 1945 the place was a municipality in the Allenstein district . Most of the Germans from the time before the flight and expulsion in 1945 are buried in the old cemetery .

Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population in the Allenstein voting area , to which Neu Kockendorf belonged, voted on July 11, 1920 on whether it would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus to Germany) or join Poland. In Neu Kockendorf, 340 people voted to remain with East Prussia, while Poland did not vote.
