Bus traffic in the Arnhem-Nijmegen city region has since been marketed under the name “ breng ”. Other Dutch trolleybus operations previously existed in Groningen from 1927 to 1965 and in Nijmegen from 1952 to 1969.

Line network

history

Car 138 in service on Line 5 at the end of the 1950s

In Arnhem deutsch  Arnhem , the tram depot was destroyed during the Second World War . There were already plans to stop tram operation and replace it with a trolleybus operation. In 1949 the first trolleybus line was opened between Arnhem and Velp (line 1, later line 3).

In the following years the network was expanded to include routes to Oosterbeek (line 1), Geitenkamp (line 2), Hoogkamp (line 2), Alteveer (line 3), Malburgen (line 5, later line 3) and 't Broek (line 3 , later line 5) expanded. In addition, an amplifier line 7 was set up on the central section of line 1 .

Today six lines operate in Arnhem with a cumulative length of almost 52 kilometers:

7th Rijkerswoerd - Kronenburg - GelreDome - Centraal Station - Centrum - Station Velperpoort - Angerenstein - Monnikenhuizen - Geitenkamp 10/15 min 44/45 min

The main route of the network is the northern inner city ring, which is used in sections by all trolleybus routes. The same applies to Arnhem train station, which is a bit off the ring . While the diameter line 1 passes it regularly on its route, the Centraal Station is also the southern starting point of line 2, which makes it the only radial line in the network. The other diameter lines 3, 5, 6 and 7 serve the station in all directions from the city ring by means of a short branch trip.

line 1

At the Gemeente Museum stop in Lombok , a work of art spans the northwest branch of line 1

West of the city center, Line 1 opens up the Lombok district between the Amsterdam – Arnhem railway line and the Rhine , the Mariëndaal landscape park and the suburb of Oosterbeek in the neighboring municipality of Renkum . From Arnhem train station, the route follows the Utrechtseweg to the Oosterbeek parish hall, after which it branches off to the north on Stationsweg. The final stop is at the local train station.

The four-lane John Frost Bridge is one of two Rhine crossings in the trolleybus network

Line 1 crosses the Rhine to the south-east of the city center on the John Frost Bridge. The districts of Groene Weide , Immerloo I and II and Het Duifje in the Malburgen district are accessed via Huissenze- and Keizerstraat .

Line 2

On line 2, the shortest trolleybus route in Arnhem with a length of around three kilometers, the last two solo cars are usually used. Starting from the station, the line opens up the districts of Burgemeesterswijk , Gulden Bodem , Sterrenberg and Hoogkamp to the northwest of the city center . The junction from the inner city ring takes place at Willemsplein. Together with line 3, the railway line is crossed, then line 2 turns onto the Zijpendaalseweg artery. At the water museum, the route branches off onto Burgemeestersplein, then follows Van Lawick van Pabststraat and Bakenbergseweg to the Schelmseweg / Bakenbergseweg terminus .

Line 3

On the northern section of line 3, there is a route to Burgers' Zoo , which is usually served alternately during the day. The branch of the north branch takes place shortly after the Oremusplein stop in Cranevelt, north-west of the Rijnstate hospital. The route towards Burgers' Zoo runs north over the Kluizeweg, while on the way back you drive over the Eduard van Beinumlaan, located around 100 meters to the west.

Lines 5 and 6

Lines 5 and 6 were a common line known as Line 5 until 2012. The lines were separated when the 2012/2013 timetable changed.

The large loop of houses in Schuytgraaf , which was put into operation at the end of 2010 , represents the last extension of the route in the trolleybus network. The junction from the existing route 6 to De Laar West takes place at the Hollandweg stop . The turning loop over the streets Minervasingel and Metamorfosenallee can be driven in both directions and is therefore served alternately to the right and left starting from the junction behind the Zuid station (Süd Bahnhof). The trolleybuses take their final stop in Schuytgraaf at the Koningskers stop .

The north branch of lines 5 and 6 branches east of Winkelcentrum Presikhaaf. Line 6 to Elsweide HAN runs north on the Lange Water road from here. On line 5 Presikhaaf , a small block bypass through the streets Kinderkamp and Middachtensingel was given up in favor of a turning loop a little further south. The overhead line leading out of town through Kinderkamp was dismantled and also relocated to Middachtensingel.

Line 7

Line 7 opens up the districts of Monnikenhuizen and Geitenkamp in the north . Starting from the Velperplein stop on the inner city ring , the route runs together with line 3 on the Velperstraat to the northeast. After the Velperpoort train station , line 7 leaves the shared route and branches off onto Raapopseweg. After a short time you reach the Roosendaalseweg, an arterial road to the northeast . After Monnikenhuizen , the route branches off in Geitenkamp to the northwest on the Middenweg, Geitenkamp and Schuttersbergweg residential roads. Line 7 reaches its northernmost point at Schuttersbergplein before reaching the terminus on a small square at the end of Sperwerstraat.

In the south, line 7 leaves the city center together with line 5/6 via the Nelson Mandela Bridge, which has a separate bus lane. Not far from the GelreDome stadium , line 5/6 branches off to the west, while line 7 runs directly north past the stadium. The bus lane ends at Winkelcentrum Kronenburg and the Rijkerswoerd district is reached via the streets Burgemeester Matsersingel and Marga Klompélaan. The terminus of the same name is not far from the building line on the Ernest Hemingwaystraat. The suspension of the overhead lines in the turning loop is artistically designed in the form of a permeable canopy .

future

Reactivation of the route through Malburgen and Vredenburg

In addition, there are plans to operate the former trolleybus route through Malburgen West , Vredenburg and Holthuizen electrically again and to extend it to Arnhem Zuid station via Rijkerswoerd , De Laar Oost and West . Line 4, which is currently operated by diesel vehicles, could thus be replaced by trolleybuses. The former overhead lines in Malburgen , Vredenburg and Holthuizen still partially exist, but would probably have to be replaced. In the area of De Laar , a new line is required. At the Zuid train station , the new trolleybus line could take over the Schuytgraaf branch from today's line 5.

Historic vehicles

The historic car 101 was the first trolleybus in Arnhem. It is available today for special trips
The Oudsten B79T KM560 0170 in use in Rostov-on-Don (2009)
Four Ghent Van Hool AG 280 T were used on loan in Arnhem between 1996 and 1999, including wagon 10 taken here in Ghent

There are also four historic trolleybuses in Arnhem. The first Arnhem trolleybus with the number 101 (1949) is owned by Connexxion and is regularly used for special trips. The three other cars 139 (1956), 128 (1974) and 158 (1984) belong to the historical collection of the “Stichting Veteraan Autobussen” (SVA), a nationwide foundation for the preservation of historical buses.

Cars 101 and 139 are trolleybuses of the type 9721 manufactured by British United Traction (BUT) and the Dutch coachbuilder Verheul. The electrics come from EEC. While both trolleybuses are almost identical on a technical level, car 139, built around seven years later, was equipped with a modernized body. This differs from the predecessor mainly in its larger side windows, a large target film box and a distinctive, tapered windshield . Both vehicles are painted dark blue with white windows and roof areas. The Connexxion-owned car 101 is currently in regular operation, while the SVA bus is in a very poor condition and is not ready for use and is waiting for future processing.

O-Bus 128 is a DAF MB 200 with a standard body from Den Oudsten and Kiepe -Elektrik, which has 39 seats. In contrast to the older vehicles, the car has batteries that enable an emergency drive of around one kilometer. In the historic fleet, 128 is the oldest trolleybus in the light and dark blue color scheme used to this day. Apart from that, the changed arrangement of the rear door is particularly striking. After a fatal accident in which a passenger got under the rear axle of an approaching bus after getting off the bus, the city council ordered that in future only buses with an exit door located at the rear instead of between the axles. The car is currently being refurbished by the SVA and is therefore not operational.

The trolleybus number 158 also comes from Den Oudsten. The electrical equipment for the type B79T KM560 was again supplied by Kiepe. Here, too, the exit door is at the rear. The bus has a total of 34 seats. The vehicle is drivable, but is currently also parked.

Furthermore there is also a historical work vehicle owned by the Foundation based on stocks of the Canadian army were 1,945 more Dodge - minibuses to take effect. One car was equipped with a lifting platform and from then on served the tram catenary service as an official vehicle. Later he played a major role in setting up the catenary network for the trolleybus. In 1955, the Arnhem-based company Ravenhorst equipped the car with a closed body.

Connexxion and the working group of the Museum Bus Foundation work closely together to maintain and operate the historic vehicles.
