London Array is an offshore wind farm off the east coast of England. Planning began in 2001 and the project was approved in November 2007. A total of up to 341  wind turbines were planned, which will be erected over a period of four years and have a total output of around one gigawatt .

The first expansion stage with 175 wind turbines and a total output of 630  MW was completed in December 2012, and the full commissioning took place in April 2013. On July 4, 2013, Prime Minister David Cameron officially opened London Array as the largest offshore wind farm in the world at the time .

London Array is currently the largest wind farm in the North Sea . The site is located in the outer mouth of the Thames off the coast of the English counties of Kent and Essex and covers an area of ​​245 square kilometers with a water depth of up to 23 meters.

Project development

The project was developed by the London Array Limited consortium . The British E.ON subsidiary, Dong Energy and the Mubadala Development Company , which took over 20 percent of E.ON's shares in 2008, were involved. The energy company Royal Dutch Shell was initially involved , but withdrew in 2008. In the final expansion with 1000 MW, 3400  GWh of energy will be produced annually, which corresponds to the energy requirements of 750,000 households.

Phase 1

The first expansion stage with 175 wind turbines (WTG) and a total output of 630 megawatts was completed in December 2012. The turbines were supplied by Siemens Windenergie . Turbines of the type SWT 3.6-120 with a nominal output of 3.6 megawatts were installed, the turbines have a rotor diameter of 120 meters and a hub height of 87 meters. The total height of a wind turbine is 147 meters.

The monopile foundations for the wind turbines and two substations built Bilfinger Berger , together with its Danish partner Per Årslev. In the two transformer platforms, the electricity from the wind turbines is transformed from medium voltage (33 kV) to 150 kV and fed via submarine cables to a specially constructed transformer station in Cleve Hill, where there is a connection to the 400 kV network. A total of 210 kilometers of 33 kV cables and 220 kilometers of 150 kV cables were laid.

According to the investors, the total investment amounted to 2.2 billion pounds, that is around 2.5 billion euros.

The annual production in 2015 was around 2500 GWh, which corresponds to a capacity factor of around 45% or around 4000 full load hours . In December 2015, the wind farm fed 369 GWh into the grid, with a capacity factor of 78.9% this month.

Phase 2

The total cost after completing Phase 2 with an additional 240 megawatts was estimated at £ 3 billion. The financing should also be secured by the European Investment Bank . The British government's goal was to increase the share of renewable energies in electrical power supply to 15.4% by 2015.

The plans to expand the project by 240 MW were abandoned in February 2014.

Maintenance of the turbines is carried out by Siemens. The maintenance contract was extended in October 2017.
