Olaf Finsen

Olaf Finsen (born February 3, 1859 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † September 15, 1937 in Copenhagen ) was the first Faroese pharmacist and mayor of Tórshavn.

Olaf was the son of the bailiff Hannes Finsen from Reykjavík and his first wife Johanne Sofie Formann from Falster . She died when Olaf was only five years old. His younger brother Niels Ryberg Finsen is known as a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Olaf Finsen was married to Maria Augusta, née Øllgaard from Copenhagen.

In 1879 he took his exam. pharm. and in 1882 he became cand. pharm. From May 6, 1883 to 1913 he was a pharmacist in his hometown, from October 19, 1910 to December 31, 1922 in Vejle, Denmark, and then in Copenhagen until his death.

From 1895 to 1909 Finsen sat on the city council of Tórshavn municipality and was also mayor from 1904 to 1909 . He served as a member of the Løgtings from 1896 to 1901 . At that time there were no political parties, so he was elected as a single person.
