Live and act

Olof Hammarsten began studying medicine at the University of Uppsala on May 22, 1861, where he became Med. Cand. On May 29, 1866 and Med. Lic. In the same year he obtained his doctorate in medicine and physiology and was then assistant in the laboratory for clinical chemistry at Uppsala University. On January 24, 1873 he became assistant professor for medicinal and physiological chemistry, on June 1, 1877 he was appointed associate professor for medicine and on November 16, 1883 as full professor for medicinal and physiological chemistry. Hammarsten had been Vice Rector of Uppsala University since June 1, 1893, and was appointed Rector of the University on June 1, 1901. He retired as professor and rector on May 31, 1905.

Hammarsten was a member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala (1878), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1881), the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg (1895, honorary member 1907) and the Royal Physiographical Society in Lund (1900, honorary member 1916 ). On May 28, 1919 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina for the chemistry section and the physiology section ( matriculation number 3419 ). In 1901 he received the Berzelius Medal, in 1903 the Björkénska Prize and in 1926 the Gustaf Adolf Medal .

Olof Hammarsten was a member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry from 1905 to 1926. He himself was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1907 by E. Riegler, in 1910 by Leon Paweł Marchlewski and Walery Jaworski , in 1912 by W. Gulowitsch and in 1913 by E. Riegler, W. Reiss, Leon Paweł Marchlewski and Napoleon Cybulski .
