The real favorite, the American Matt McGrath , had suffered a knee injury while throwing a hammer two days earlier and could not compete.
Winner Patrick McDonald, like the runner-up Ryan of Irish descent, was able to improve the Olympic record in qualification to 11.00 m. In the final, he threw the weight another 265 cm. So the shot put runner-up in these games and Olympic shot put winner from 1912 still got a gold medal in Antwerp . Second Patrick Ryan, Olympic champion in hammer throw , also stayed above the old record with his 10.965 m. The Swede Carl Johan Lind won bronze.
