The swimming competition over 200m breaststroke men at the 1956 Summer Olympics took place between December 3 and 6 December 1956th The venue was the Olympic Park Swimming and Diving Stadium.
The competition was on the Olympic program for the tenth time. Of the 23 athletes originally registered, 21 athletes from 17 countries took part.
After swimmers who had practiced the dolphin technique had previously determined the competition at the two Olympic Games, the rules provided for a return to the original technique after the introduction of separate competitions for this style in breaststroke. Uncertainties in the rules determined the competition. Six of the 21 swimmers who started had to be disqualified for improper use of the chest technique, including the winner of the second heat, Herbert Klein from Germany .
With the Japanese Masaru Furukawa , the Dane Knud Gleie and the German Herbert Klein , the reigning and two former world record holders were at the start. Klein, the Helsinki bronze medalist, was the only swimmer from the Olympic final four years earlier.
Furukawa, who was able to improve the Olympic record in both of his starts, won not least thanks to his long underwater phases after the turn. Half a year after the end of the games, this technique was banned by the World Swimming Federation. Yoshimura ensured a Japanese double success. In the end, the seven rated swimmers were separated by just seven seconds, one of the closest finals on this route to date. All were below the former Olympic record from 1936, but comparatively little compared to other competitions over the same period.
Records
Before the start of the Olympic Games, the following records were valid.
World record | 2: 31.0 min. | Masaru Furukawa | Tokyo (Japan) | October 1, 1955 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Olympic record * | 2: 42.5 min. | Tetsuo Hamuro | Berlin (Germany) | August 15, 1936 |
* After the introduction of our own competitions for the butterfly technique, the times achieved in this style were deleted from the record books and the Olympic record of Tetsuo Hamuro from 1936 was again set.
