At the Olympic Games in 1956 in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne , the road race in cycling for men was held on December 7th .
88 athletes - of whom only 44 were rated - from 28 nations determined the winning teams over a distance of 187.73 km (= 116.7 mi ) in the Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows . The rankings of the three best drivers of each nation in the individual ranking (EW) were decisive for the team ranking : The rankings were added up, the team with the lowest number of points won the gold medal.
The winner was the team from France . The team from Great Britain took second place, the team from Germany won the bronze medal.
