For the fourth time, a three-round qualification tournament, through which two teams qualified for the Olympic Games, served as qualification for the women's tournament at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games for the teams from the AFC area . For the first time, the Lao and Sri Lankan national soccer teams took part. Because the final round was scheduled for the end of February and beginning of March 2016, China and Japan could not take part in the Algarve Cup as in previous years . The same applies to Australia as well as South Korea and the Cyprus Cup , which have participated there in recent years.
Of the 18 teams entered, the five strongest teams Australia , the People's Republic of China , Japan , North and South Korea qualified directly for the third round. Thailand and Vietnam did not have to intervene until the second round, in which one team could qualify for the third round. Since Bahrain withdrew after the draw, the remaining ten teams initially played in the first round in a group of four and two groups of three, three teams for the second round.
First round
The group winners qualified for the second round.
Group A in Myanmar
The team from Bahrain, which was also drawn to the group, withdrew. All games were played at Mandalarthiri Stadium in Mandalay .
Both the group winners and runners-up qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . All fifteen games took place in Osaka , ten of them at Nagai Stadium and five at Kincho Stadium .
On the first day of the match, the South Korean goalkeeper Kim Jung-mi was the first Asian goalkeeper to make her 100th international match. On the last day of the match, she was the record-breaking South Korean player with her 104th international match.
On the last day of the match, the Japanese players Yukari Kinga and Mizuho Sakaguchi also made their 100th international match.
Japanese coach Norio Sasaki resigned as national coach after the last game.
As a result of the games in this tournament - and the results of other teams in tournaments taking place at the same time - the Australians climbed four places in the FIFA world rankings and achieved their best position ever with fifth place. The People's Republic of China even improved by five places and South Korea by one place, while Japan and North Korea lost three places and Vietnam six places.
