A skeleton competition was held for the first time at the II. Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz in 1928 . The venue was the Cresta Run natural track with a length of 1210 m, a height difference of 157 m and 15 curves.

The competition consisted of three runs, the results of which were added together. A total of ten athletes took part, but two could not finish all runs. The Heaton brothers were regular guests in St. Moritz. John Heaton was able to win the silver medal again in St. Moritz in 1948 . David Carnegie, who came third, held the title of Earl of Northesk .
